Moving Made Simple
From careful packing to moving day logistics, these expert tips will help you plan with confidence—and avoid the most common moving pitfalls.
Quick wins you can do today
-
1) Label by room + priority
Write the room and a priority number (1–3) on two sides of every box. Priority 1 opens first (kettle, bedding, chargers). This makes unloading and the first night far less stressful.
-
2) Pack a first-night box
Put bedding, toiletries, a couple of mugs, tea/coffee, phone chargers, a change of clothes and basic cleaning items in one box. Keep it with you in the car or by the door. A true life saver.
-
3) Photograph cable setups
Before you unplug TVs, Wi-Fi, or monitors, take a quick photo. Re-connecting at the new place becomes plug-and-play—no guessing.
-
4) Colour-code rooms
Use different coloured tape or stickers for each room. Put a simple colour key on the new home’s front door so our team can place boxes perfectly.
Packing & protection: how to move like a pro
Whether you’re moving across London or out of the city, good packing is everything. Here’s how to protect belongings the way our team does on the job.
Boxes: Choose double-walled for heavy items. Smaller boxes for books; medium for kitchenware; large for linens and light items.
Wraps: Use paper for most items, bubble wrap for fragile or odd shapes, and blankets for furniture.
Specials: Wardrobe cartons keep clothes crease-free. TV covers and mattress bags prevent scuffs and dust.
Tape & tools: Quality packing tape, a tape gun, permanent markers and “FRAGILE” stickers save time and headaches.
Plates & bowls: Wrap individually and stack vertically (like records). Cushion with scrunched paper at the bottom/top of the box.
Glasses & mugs: Use dividers where possible; fill gaps with soft paper. Mark FRAGILE on two sides.
TVs & monitors: Original box is best; otherwise, a TV cover plus corner protectors. Never lay flat in transit.
Art & mirrors: Use picture cartons; tape an “X” across the glass before wrapping to reduce shard movement if broken.
Electronics: Coil leads, bag small parts, and keep accessories in the same box. Take photos before unplugging.
Dismantle smart: Beds, wardrobes and tables often travel safer in parts. Bag screws/fixings and tape the bag to the item.
Protect corners & legs: Foam or cardboard guards stop knocks in corridors and lifts.
Drawers: Empty heavy drawers; for light clothing, you can keep items in and secure the drawer shut.
Sofas & mattresses: Use dedicated covers to avoid scuffs and dust during loading/unloading.
Label format: ROOM • Box # • Priority — e.g., KITCHEN • #12 • P2. Write on two sides and the top.
Priority system: P1 (open day one), P2 (first 72 hours), P3 (non-urgent).
Simple inventory: Keep a quick note in your phone (box numbers + key items). It’s a lifesaver when you’re hunting for the router or kettle.

Timelines & checklists
A clear plan keeps stress low and moving day smooth. Use these timelines, then grab the full checklist as a PDF.
Confirm your date window and talk to building management if you’re in a block (lift bookings, loading bays).
Parking & access: Check if you’ll need a bay suspension or visitor permits at either address (your local London council can advise).
Declutter: Sell or donate items you won’t take. Fewer boxes = faster, cheaper move.
Start supplies: Order boxes, tape, paper and wardrobe cartons.
Utilities & services: Plan broadband switch/activation; tell insurers, schools and GP/dentist you’re moving.
Pack non-essentials room by room (guest room, books, out-of-season clothes).
Label & priority system: Use ROOM • # • P1–P3 on two sides and top of every box.
Appliances: Check manuals for moving instructions (washing-machine transit bolts, fridge/freezer defrost timing).
Parking checks again: If you need a bay suspension or estate access, confirm arrangements now.
Address changes: Start updating banks, subscriptions and deliveries; consider Royal Mail Redirection.
First-night box: Bedding, toiletries, a few plates/mugs, kettle, tea/coffee, chargers, basic tools.
Food: Run down the fridge/freezer. Defrost the freezer 24 hours before moving.
Electronics: Photograph setups; bag remotes, screws and cables.
Keys & fobs: Gather everything for both addresses in one folder.
Parking & restrictions: Re-check any parking suspensions, congestion/ULEZ considerations if you’re driving yourself.
Access ready: Clear hallways, prop doors (if allowed), reserve the lift if applicable.
Meter readings: Photograph gas, electric, water at both addresses.
Final sweep: Cupboards, loft, shed, garden.
Fragile & essentials first: Show our team the P1 boxes and fragile items.
Arrival at new home: Place a colour key on the front door so we can match boxes to rooms fast.
Unpack essentials: Prioritise kitchen, bedrooms and Wi-Fi.
Waste & recycling: Flatten boxes, keep a few for returns. Check local council collection days.
Register locally: Update GP/dentist if you’ve moved borough; check school catchments if relevant.
Security: Change door codes if applicable; test alarms and smoke detectors.
